The Issue of Mold in Residential Buildings

Generating a great deal of attention in recent months is the presence of mold in homes throughout both the country as well as in the Kansas City area. Conflicting and inconclusive information about mold, its causes and its cures abound. To help with this problem, the HBA, in conjunction with the National Association of Home Builders is researching the issue of mold and would encourage you to let us know any information you may have regarding this issue so that we can pass it on to other association members.

While mold growth in an indoor environment is not a new issue, a strong wave of litigation against builders, building owners and property managers is gaining momentum and gained the attention of the media. Additionally, It has been the subject of disputes between insurers and policyholders. To find out about your coverage, check with your insurance carrier.

The Research Center recently completed a white paper on mold that describes the issue, how a builder and a homeowner can limit mold and restoration following evidence of mold. Remember to check the HBA members-only Web site often, as the site will be updated often to bring you the latest resources.
